Relationship Essay

John Kanally: My brother and friend.
I have known John Joseph Kanally since May 18, 1993, the day I was born. From that day forward he became not only a brother, but also a friend that I will have forever. Currently he is a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, and is stationed at Camp Pendelton  in Southern California. John is only three years older than me, which is not that big of an age difference. Our closeness in age and amount of time we spent together growing up, made our relationship what it is today.
As kids, John and I were always together. Growing up we would play all kinds of games, shoot hoops, play baseball, watch movies, hang out, and just be silly. We had lots of inside jokes, and could laugh forever about the silliest things. When we are together he always teases me, calls me names....but I just laugh because I know he does not mean it, its just what he does. John and I had so much fun spending time with each other, but we also  support and encourage each other to accomplish whatever we wanted to do. He encouraged, and coached me when I wanted to make the basketball team, and was there for me when I didn’t make it. John gave me advice on lots of things, and was always there if I wanted to talk. When he was thinking about becoming a Marine, I supported his decision either way, as long as he was happy. During boot camp I wrote him all the time, and at his graduation I was so happy to see him, and was extremely proud of him.
Growing up we saw each other everyday, but since he joined the Marines I only get to see him a couple times a year. I look forward to his visits so much. I miss hanging out with him and when I do see him I expect the biggest, best almost painful bear hug. This sounds silly, but I can’t wait for the meaningless name calling and teasing. We play a game or watch a movie, and I get to spend quality time with my best friend, that I don’t get to experience everyday. John was my first friend, and is my best friend. I could hang out with him any day. We are there for each other, and enjoy one another’s company so much. We are not just brother and sister, we are best friends.
